The National Association of Realtors recently released an article with some great suggestions on keeping your home safe from water damage and what to do in the event of a flood or burst pipes. Here are the key steps outlined in their article for quick reference.
- Block Water From Entry Points
- Put in a Second Line of Defense
- Sump pumps
- French drains
- Exterior waterproofing
- Interior drain tiles
- Boilers and furnaces should be elevated to keep from being flooded
- Window wells should drain properly and be accessible for debris removal.
- Alarm systems in your home should connect to a computer, the Internet, or a mobile device to warn you of impending disaster.
- Act fast if water pours in
- Turn off pipes once water starts flowing.
- Prioritize people and pets. If water comes in fast and furiously, get everyone out.
- Protect Your Pipes
- Open cabinet doors to allow in warmer air and let faucets drip, both help avoid freezing when temperatures plummet.
